Rice Memorial High School Historic Renovation

South Burlington, VT

Winner of a Preservation Trust of Vermont Award
Renovation of the 94,000 SF Rice Memorial High School reversed a pattern of increasing maintenance costs and declining enrollment.  Black River Design focused the budget in areas that would have the biggest impact.  Updating obsolete building systems, like the iconic curtain wall, and replacing worn out finishes has reinvigorated the historic mid-century modern building and the school community. On the interior, lobbies, cafeteria and bathrooms received new finishes, lighting, casework, and custom artwork.  These highly visible changes overshadow less obvious upgrades including accessibility, a new elevator, and heating, electrical, and sprinkler systems.
